The notion of emigration takes roots

During a difficult phase in my life, I was confronted with the significant loss of my job. Despite my persistent efforts to find new work, success was unattainable, leaving my future shrouded in doubt. It was during this period that a discussion with my parents and their friends ignited the idea of emigration.

Their daughter had undertaken a similar path to the United Kingdom, finding joy and fulfilment there. With no second thoughts, I made a firm decision: I would leave behind the country that offered me no future, and set out in search of my destiny elsewhere, severing the ties that once bound me.
This article will delve into the various facets of the profound experience of emigrating at the age of 40.
Stepping Into the Unknown: Embracing New Cultures and Possibilities
It was an intimidating endeavour for someone who had never ventured beyond the borders of their home country. My international trips had been limited only to Ayamonte, Spain. For me, it was like going to the neighbouring village since it was just a 20-minute drive from my grandparents’ house. And a fleeting day in Morocco`s, Tanger. But now, an exhilarating opportunity beckoned, to immerse myself in new cultures, to start afresh, and to seize the myriad of possibilities that lay before me. And it was this very prospect that consumed my thoughts.

Having resolved to take this route, I sought the counsel and wisdom of friends living in the UK. Their words, full of enthusiasm, spurred me to seize the opportunities that lay before me in this chosen land. The UK, with its language familiar to me from diligent study in school and the prospect of renewing old friendships, extended a warm invitation. I was yet to discover the extent to which this language would entwine with my journey
The painful farewell to beloved ones

As I embraced the prospect of emigrating at 40, I soon realized that it came with unique challenges compared to younger years. One of the most poignant challenges was bidding farewell to beloved family and friends, who had been pillars of strength and solace. This emotional parting proved to be one of the most arduous roads to traverse.
Many individuals who undertake this journey later in life often relocate with their families or have relatives in the chosen country to provide initial support with accommodation, paperwork, and emotional encouragement. Though I had only a couple of friends in London, their companionship provided solace, and I was not entirely alone.

In an effort to stay connected, I embraced digital communication through platforms like Facebook and Skype to bridge the gap, mindful of the expenses associated with international calls. I realized that in pursuing a new life, I was not merely leaving behind friends and family but also the places, memories, and essence of my lived history.
Saying good bye to beloved places
As I prepared for the journey, I found myself in Lisbon, where I tackled documentation, in an unconventional way – by walking through the sunlit city and savouring its beauty. What had once been a place I hurriedly traversed on my daily commute transformed into a landscape of nostalgia and farewell. Every street corner and alleyway held significance, etched into my heart. It was in those moments that I bid a fond farewell to my beloved Lisbon.

A similar sentiment echoed within the walls of my home, a sanctuary filled with cherished memories. As I stepped out of its comforting embrace, I carried with me the essence of the good times I had experienced within those walls.
These departures weighed heavily on my soul, symbolizing the closing of one chapter and the hopeful beginning of another – an adventure marked by longing, self-discovery, and love.
The painful separation from a beloved dog
In the depths of my heart and soul, emotions and feelings thrived as I delved into the intricate tale of “ emigration at 40 and loneliness” in my article. I explored the profound depths of an emigrant`s heart, unravelled the pangs of solitude, and laid bare the yearning for connection amidst new horizons.

Amidst all the challenges, one unexpected poignant struggle touched my soul in a way I never expected – leaving behind my beloved dog. The idea of leaving my loyal companion had never crossed my mind until the reality of emigration confronted me.
While I had limited experience in international travel, I held onto hope, knowing that some pet-friendly companies allowed small animals to travel in the cabin. However, the disappointment struck when I discovered that the UK law barred my furry friend from flying with me.

My heart ached as I embarked on an intensive search, seeking a way to take my little princess with me. Yet, every path seemed to lead to a dead-end. At the end , guided by advice and an unwavering resolve, I made the heart-wrenching decision to leave my cherished companion, Cookie, in the care of my parents. However, I vowed to find a way to reunite with her, for never did it cross my mind to abandon her.
With the tenacity of a fighter, I refused to surrender until I discovered the means to be with my beloved furry companion for all and forever.
All the trials and tribulations I encountered in this journey, alongside my unwavering determination, are chronicled in my article, “How to Emigrate with a Dog,” where I share the details of a tale marked by love, hope, and reunion.

Feeling hope
As I embarked on this new adventure, I was filled with excitement at the prospect of starting afresh. The canvas of my life awaited a fresh stroke, painted upon unfamiliar lands where opportunities beckoned with open arms. Although my homeland had disappointed me, and left me disheartened, but the allure of a place filled with whispers of endless possibilities, just a 2 hours and 30 minutes from home, called out to my adventurous spirit. With each passing day, hope blossomed anew in my heart and mind, birthing the dream of a life imbued with financial abundance and quality.
Navigating financial challenges
However, this grand endeavour presented its own set of financial challenges. Emigrating at 40, especially to a country with a higher cost of living, demanded careful financial planning. Travel expenses, visa costs, and housing all required meticulous consideration. My financial resources were not abundant, and I understood the importance of crafting a sound financial strategy. It was a complex labyrinth I needed to navigate, but I was determined to find a way.
Though my heart swelled with gratitude, financial constrains weighed on my mind. Graciously, my parents, offered their support, providing me with a budget to embark on this transformative journey. The cost of plane tickets from Portugal to the UK proved reasonable, easing my burden and grating some respite for my purse.
Additionally, the UK`s membership in the EU at that time allowed for entry without the need for a VISA, saving both time and resources.
However, unforeseen expenses merged, such as the translation and international certification of my Professional card from the Portuguese Ministry of Health. Furthermore, the translation of my university degree certificate for use in the UK incurred additional costs and last but not the less the international registration in HCPC, who is the body that regulates my profession in the UK was really expensive.
With no other path to choose, I had to delay translating my professional certificate, and my HCPC registration too, hoping that in a not-so-distant future, within the embrace of the UK’s shores and financial stability anew, I could tend to all these scrolls of due.
Revamping my career
Drawing strength from my friends already residing in the UK, I embraced their advice to create a new CV tailored to the distinct format of UK. Diligently, I embarked on research and rewrote my professional journey, eager to present myself in a manner that would resonate with prospective employers. And at long last, I uploaded my CV on Indeed.
In this story of determination, hope, and unwavering resolve, my heart remained steadfast as I ventured forth to seize the myriad opportunities that awaited me on this remarkable journey.
Hope Amidst Challenges
Over the course of 1 to 2 weeks, a glimmer of hope began to illuminate my path. One of english work agencies found me on Indeed and showed keen interest in my skills, offering locum positions in hospitals and applauding my work experience. A well-intentioned friend advised me to withhold the fact that I was still in Portugal, that I wait until I arrived in the UK before responding. Little did I know, this guidance would inadvertently come at an additional expense: the need for proof of immunization against certain diseases to work in a UK laboratory, a requirement that had eluded my awareness until that moment, adding to my financial burden in the UK. For I had to obtain it through private means, whereas had I done so in Portugal, I could have simply visited my GP and acquired it through the national health service without any cost.
As the UK had a pressing need for healthcare professionals and actively sought individuals from other countries. In retrospect, agencies began to approach universities students to entice professionals back to the UK.
Nonetheless, my excitement grew as opportunities in my field multiplied, all while my meticulously crafted CV garnered praise.
A friend`s unexpected help
Yet, amid these challenges, fate had a way of introducing serendipity into my journey. My friends in London had pointed me toward accommodation options, but I was disheartened by the high costs. It was then that the memory of a long-lost friend resurfaced, a friend who had relocated to the UK years ago. Harnessing the power of social media, I reached out through Facebook, and to my amazement, everything changed.
My dear friend, Joao, had risen in stature and now held a managerial position at a prestigious automobile quality company in Birmingham, a city distinct from the bustle of London. Destiny smiled upon me as he expressed the need for additional staff to work alongside him. In a flash, we formulated a plan that would reshape my life. Upon my arrival in Birmingham from Portugal, Joao would meet me at the train station. Under his guidance, I would find refuge in his home while collaborating with him until the agency secured a hospital position for me.

The enigmatic workings of the universe had orchestrated a remarkable twist, leading me out of solitude and into the comforting embrace of a trusted friend. In Joao’s presence, I discovered guidance and solace as I navigated this unfamiliar, uncharted path. His companionship served as a beacon of light in the vast sea of uncertainty, for which I would remain eternally grateful. Although life’s currents had at times carried us in different directions, Joao would forever hold a special place in my heart, a cherished memory warming even the coldest of days.
