Sometimes, life throws unexpected challenges your way, and for me, this led to my first solo trip to the Isle of Wight. Notably, it was the first summer I hadnāt planned to visit Portugal, which felt strange and unfamiliar. After experiencing a period of emotional turmoil, I found myself searching for something new to refresh my spirit. As a result, when my colleagues suggested the Isle of Wight, curiosity quickly got the better of me. Ultimately, I didnāt realize at the time that this solo experience with my dog, Cookie, would transform into much more than just a getaway. Instead, it became a chance to reset, reflect, and discover peace during a challenging phase of my life.
Finding the Perfect Pet-Friendly Getaway: Parkdean Resorts on the Isle of Wight
After making the decision, I started searching for pet-friendly accommodation, focusing on B&Bs and hotels. Then, suddenly, I came across an ad for a holiday caravan park – Parkdean Resorts . I clicked on the site and discovered they offer several pet-friendly locations on the Isle of Wight. When I checked the dates and prices, I was amazed. It was more affordable than a B&B, and the pictures of the caravans were stunning. Each caravan came with kitchen appliances, and unlike a B&B, I wouldnāt have to share the kitchen or bathrooms. This gave me the freedom to either eat out or cook if I wanted to save money. Best of all, Iād have my own space for me and Cookie.
I was still unsure which location to pick, since I didnāt know the Isle of Wight at all. So, I chose one close to the beach and not far from the ferry by checking the map.

My Experience (and a Lesson in Directions)
As someone whoās admittedly not the best at researching routes, I ended up taking a less direct approach. Specifically, I travelled from London Waterloo to Southampton Central before catching the ferry. Although this route added some extra time, I donāt regret the experience. After all, itās these unexpected turns that often make for the most memorable stories!
My Route to the Isle of Wight

Since my sense of direction isn’t the best, this journey was filled with a few unexpected stepsābut that’s the spirit of adventure, right? I took a train from London Waterloo to Southampton Central, then caught the Red Funnel ferry to East Cowes.
Upon arriving in East Cowes, I quickly realized there was another step to my journey: crossing the River Medina by taking a small chain ferry, or ‘floating bridge,’ to reach Cowes. Surprisingly, this twist added an unexpected sense of adventure to my plans. Thankfully, the locals were incredibly kind and patiently explained that the ‘floating bridge’ was the next step. Furthermore, I was rewarded with scenic views of the river and a delightful mini-gallery of historical photos onboard. In the end, although it caught me off guard, this unique detour became a memorable highlight of the journey.
The Final Stretch of Adventure
Lost in Cowes: A Familiar Feeling
Arriving at Cowes felt like dĆ©jĆ vuāI was lost once again! Without any bus or taxi in sight, I decided to head to a nearby pub, hoping to find some helpful directions. Outside, a few gentlemen were relaxing and, although they didnāt know where the nearest bus stop was, they kindly called over the pub owner to assist me. Fortunately, he took the time to explain my options clearly.
He suggested that taking a taxi would be the best choice for reaching Parkdean Resorts Thorness Bay Holiday Park, especially since the bus stop still required a considerable walk to the resort. Ultimately, his guidance saved me both time and unnecessary hassle.
Somehow, just when you need it, someone always appears to brighten the path
A Community Full of Kindness
What happened next truly showcased the incredible warmth of the Isle of Wight community. After listening to my situation, the pub owner not only offered to call a taxi for me free of charge but also kindly refused when I insisted on buying a drink as a thank-you. Instead, much to my surprise, he generously treated me to one himself.
As I sat there, reflecting on his thoughtfulness, I couldnāt help but feel a deep sense of gratitude. Furthermore, it reminded me of how compassion often finds you exactly when you need it the most. In the end, this experience became yet another powerful reminder that small acts of kindness can make a world of difference, especially on journeys like these.
Recommended Taxi Service ā 10/10 Stars

Though I missed the name of the friendly, pet-welcoming pub, I can absolutely recommend the local taxi service that made my journey so much easier. They provided a spacious van, handled Cookieās buggy with care, and even allowed me to enjoy my drink en route. Their thoughtfulness and warm service turned an unexpected challenge into a memorable and stress-free experience. If youāre traveling to the Isle of Wight with pets, definitely keep this company in mind!
Arriving at Thorness Bay Holiday Park
Taking a taxi turned out to be a smart and practical choice. Since the bus stop was located a 15-20 minute walk away from the parkāright in the middle of nowhereāgetting lost again would have been far too easy. Fortunately, the taxi driver kindly dropped me off right at the parkās reception, saving me both time and energy.
As I stepped into the reception area, I realized this was my very first time staying at a caravan park, and I had no idea how things worked. Thankfully, the friendly and welcoming staff immediately put me at ease. They handed me an envelope containing my keys, a card for the swimming pool, and a map of the park to help me locate my caravan with ease.

āYes, Cookie, we get to find our own caravanāletās hope we donāt get lost again,ā I joked, taking a deep breath before setting off. Thankfully, everything went smoothly, and much to my relief, we actually managed to find the caravan on our very first attempt. After a quick 15-minute walk, we reached our cozy new home for the holiday. Success!

Settling into the Caravan: Our Cozy Home
Bursting with excitement, I unlocked the door to what would be our cozy home for the next four days.
First Impressions: Bigger Than Expected
Stepping inside, I was amazedāit was even bigger than Iād imagined! To my delight, the caravan featured a well-equipped kitchen with all the appliances, a spacious living room, and a small yet cozy bathroom (because who really needs a big bathroom on holiday, right?). And to top it all off, there was a surpriseāthree bedrooms!
Exploring the Park with Cookie
After unpacking, I grabbed the map and keys, feeling ready to explore the park with Cookie by my side. Our first mission was to find the shops and stock up on a few essentials. Surprisingly, we managed to locate everything on the very first try without getting lostāa small victory! As we walked, Cookie and I took our time soaking up the parkās beautiful and serene natural scenery, making the stroll even more enjoyable.
A Pet-Friendly Experience
The parkās shops, cafĆ©s, pubs, and restaurants were mostly pet-friendly, which made exploring a breezeāexcept for the supermarket. Unfortunately, pets werenāt allowed inside. However, Cookie, being the good girl she always is, waited patiently outside while I picked up her favorite treats.
The Great Map Mishap
Sounds simple, right? Yet, on the way back, I somehow managed to get us lost! We wandered in circles for over an hour, retracing steps that all looked the same. To make matters worse, the map made no sense to meāperhaps my brain had frozen from sheer exhaustion.
Thankfully, a very kind couple came to our rescue, offering clear directions and guiding us back to the caravan. Thatās when it hit me: Iād taken a wrong turn right at the beginning! Ironically, weād been less than five minutes away the entire time.
A Serene Walk to the Beach on the Isle of Wight
Cookie and I were lucky to have beautiful summer weatherātrue sunny days that made the Isle of Wight feel like a dream destination. The path from our caravan to the beach was a refreshing 15-minute walk, offering peace and a touch of adventure along the way.
First, we passed through a small forest, perfect for a dog stroll. Cookie couldnāt hide her excitement as she explored the wide-open space, sniffing every corner and discovering new scents. Next, the forest opened into a vast green field, flat and inviting, with the sea already shimmering in the distance. The view alone brought an immediate sense of calm and anticipation.
Finally, we arrived at the parkās private beachāa hidden gem waiting to be explored. Unlike the pebbly beaches Iād expected, this one surprised me with its soft sand. Even better, the beach was nearly empty, making it feel like a private retreat just for us. Without hesitation, Cookie and I claimed our favorite spot, returning to it every single day of our stay.
Relaxed Days by the Sea
Our days on the Isle of Wight followed a peaceful rhythm, blending fun and relaxation in equal measure. Each morning, we woke up feeling refreshed and ready for the day ahead. After a leisurely breakfast, we packed our picnic essentials and eagerly made our way to the beach.
Once we arrived, our first task was setting up our little ābeach house.ā With a small tent for shade, we created a cozy spot that became our base for the day. Next, we headed straight into the sea for a refreshing swim. The salty waves felt invigorating, washing away the stress of everyday life.
After swimming, we laid back on our towels, letting the sunās warmth recharge us. Cookie and I didnāt stay still for long, though. Soon, we were playing football, her favorite game. Her excitement was infectious, and I couldnāt help but laugh as she dashed after the ball.
When it was time to rest, we enjoyed a simple but delicious picnic under the open sky. During the quieter moments, we meditated together. Cookie, ever intuitive, would sit with her back pressed against me, her paws resting in my hands. Together, we gazed at the horizon, where the endless blue of the sea met the sky. These moments of calm and connection were truly the highlight of our days.

Peaceful Evenings under the Stars
After leaving the beach each evening, we would stop at a pet-friendly pub for a refreshing drink. During these stops, Cookieās happy demeanor often drew attention, adding a cheerful vibe to the end of our day. Once we finished, we returned to the caravan for some well-deserved rest.
Back at the caravan, the first step was always a refreshing shower to wash off the dayās salt and sand. Afterward, I would lay a towel on the grass outside, where we could unwind together under the soft glow of the evening sky. Meanwhile, Cookie relaxed next to me, her calm presence making these moments even more special.
As the sun set and the stars began to appear, the atmosphere turned magical. We enjoyed a simple dinner outdoors, savoring the cool night air and the sight of countless stars shimmering above. Finally, as the day came to an end, we headed back inside the caravan. The gentle calm of the Isle of Wight carried us both to a peaceful sleep, ready for another beautiful day ahead.

Under a sky full of stars, the quiet moments shared with Cookie remind me how small we are, yet how boundless life can feel

Furthermore, Cookie had an incredible way of turning strangers into friends, reminding me that even in solitude, we are never truly alone. In her wagging tail and bright eyes, I found comfort, connection, and a gentle nudge to embrace the world with an open heart.

In the stillness of solitude, on the Isle of Wight, I found not only peace but the strength to move forwardāCookie by my side, always my guiding light.
Serendipitous Stop in Colourful Cowes
After checking out at 10:00 am, I called the same wonderful taxi company that had been my reliable companion throughout the trip. Instead of heading straight back, the kind driver dropped me off in Cowes.
A Warm Welcome from Cowes
What I thought would be a simple ferry connection turned into a pleasant surprise. Cowes greeted me with its vibrant charm. Rows of colourful shops and boutiques lined the streets, each more inviting than the last. The town had a lively, yet cozy atmosphere that tugged at my curiosity.
A Shopper`s Delight
The inviting shopfronts were too tempting to resist. Before I knew it, I was treating myself to stylish clothes and bagsābecause, letās be honest, every woman deserves a little self-care moment.
The only reason I stopped was the simple reality of transport limits. My hands were already full with holiday bags, and I knew I couldn’t carry much more.
Unexpected Joys
Cowes turned out to be the unplanned highlight of my trip. Sometimes, it’s the unplanned moments that bring the most joy.
