It is a clever ploy of the mind – after enduring the relentless stress of work, it craves respite and creates an illusion that allows you to momentarily set aside your worries and fears. Soon, you find yourself ensconced in your pyjamas, sprawled on the sofa, engrossed in TV shows, and indulging in junk food.

Breaking the Isolation: Embracing Support from Friends
As the weekends approach, your friends reach out, concerned about your well-being and inviting you to step outside your home. Unbeknownst to them, you and your sofa have become inseparable, and you respond with excuses about being in the midst of a movie, neglecting to shower, and suggesting a rain check for social outings.
Before you realize it, your self-imposed isolation has already begun, taking root in your daily life.
I was fortunate to have wonderful friends who came to my house and gently pulled me away from my self-imposed isolation, taking me out to spend time with them and offering both emotional and financial support during this challenging period. It was an incredibly difficult situation to navigate. While I felt immensely grateful for their assistance, I couldn’t help but feel awful and frustrated. My sense of self-worth took a hit because I was unable to cover even my own expenses, with my friends generously paying for everything.
My friends knew me so well that they saw this coming, and on multiple occasions, they had heartfelt conversations with me. They expressed their deep love for me and emphasized that their help came from the heart. They reassured me that, when my life started to improve, I could repay their kindness by treating them to dinners and drinks. But more importantly, they wanted me to banish the notion that I should ever be left alone at home. If I felt sad or lost, they promised to be there to listen to my fears, offer words of encouragement, and share moments of laughter.

Another crucial source of support during this challenging time was my dog, a beautiful and gentle mixed breed named Cookie, whom I had rescued from a shelter. Or rather, I should say, she rescued me for the second time in my life. The first time was when I adopted her after my first dog passed away, leaving me in profound grief. But that’s a story for another article.
You might wonder how I managed with all my financial problems, coupled with the responsibility of caring for a dog. The truth is, Cookie was a significant force of positivity in my life.
Thanks to Cookie, I never fully succumbed to the couch. Every morning, I had to get out of my pyjamas, take a shower, and step out of the house to walk her. Since childhood, I’ve felt a deep connection to nature, and even if I left the house feeling drained and joyless, after an hour of walking and playing with Cookie in the park—feeling the river breeze, hearing the rustle of trees, and the songs of birds—I returned home as a different person. I was more positive, energized, and with a smile on my face.
Animals have a remarkable way of making you feel better and happier. They possess the unique ability to convey love and positive energy through their gaze and actions.
Even at home, when my mind began to grapple with the weight of my situation, Cookie would come to comfort me. She would either rest her head on my shoulder or lap or do something comical to make me laugh. Somehow, she had the uncanny ability to dispel all those negative thoughts.
In many ways, she became my guardian angel, a constant source of solace and joy during a difficult chapter of my life.

It’s crucial to acknowledge that job loss often occurs beyond our control, particularly in today’s economic climate where companies frequently undergo restructuring or downsizing. I made inquiries about free short courses offered by the government for unemployed individuals, but unfortunately, I received no responses or calls for interviews. This lack of feedback compounded my sense of everything falling apart, and I began to grapple with self-doubt.
Even so, I remained persistent and did not give up.
I had to find a purpose.
Sewing Away Negativity: Finding Therapy in Creativity
I firmly believe that negative energy tends to attract more negativity. To counteract these emotions and boost my self-esteem and self-worth, I decided to learn sewing. While I had dabbled in crafts like crochet, embroidery, and knitting during my childhood, I had never been particularly patient with intricate details. However, as I grew older and developed a passion for Carnaval, I started crafting my own costumes.

My mother taught me how to use a sewing machine and the basics of sewing in just three days. Given my financial constraints, I decided to start making clothes for my dog while actively seeking new job opportunities. I gathered old clothes and bits of fabric from my mother, friends, and friends of friends – it turns out, sewing machines are a common household item in Portugal. Without realizing it, I had established a new routine, constantly scouring the internet for dog patterns and fresh ideas.
I must say, it was an incredibly therapeutic experience. It kept me occupied, and my mind was constantly buzzing with new creative ideas. Each time I finished a dress, I felt a sense of fulfilment, and Cookie’s joy was evident as well.

Remember, losing a job doesn’t mean life comes to a halt; there are still countless positive experiences to be had.
